After reading 'To Kill a Mockingbird" By Harper Lee, I feel that it was a challenging book to get through. I liked how Harper Lee structured the book with the racism theme. It had a a lot of drama which raised tension in the story such as the Tom Robinson trial. Some things i did not like is how it didn't have a lot of black main characters. I Feel that if there would have been more african american characters the book would be more appealing to students in the 8th grade. If there would have been more things students could relate to in the book i believe most people would be more interested in "To Kill a Mockingbird".
I believe that this book shouldn't be taught to future 8th grade classes because i think there may be better books out there for 8th graders to read. Even though not teaching this book to 8th graders may break tradition, I believe it may be worth it. It could be a better book in the world that 8th graders could read and could really be able to comprehend and analyze. Im not saying that TKAM is too hard for 8th graders i just feel as if its a bad preference because i did not find it really interesting. These are my overall thoughts of "To Kill a Mockingbird" By Harper Lee.

    1. Kalvon I agree to your opinion about if their was some more black characters in the book then the book could be more appealing to students in the 8th grade.

    2. Yes! I would like to see the story from Calpurnias point of view.

    3. I disagree when you say If there had been more African Americans then more 8th graders would be able to relate. When you think about it the book isn't really focused on relating but the racism and how Scout and Jem are coming of age and understanding the racism. It also focuses on the lessons that Atticus teaches his children to help them become better people. I don't think more African American people would have really changed anything because maybe Harper Lee wanted us to focus beyond the skin color

    4. Its my opinion. I personally think the book would have been better if it would have showed more african american characters and showed some parts of the book from their point of view so it could show us how it could've been for both races in the 1930's

    5. But we did see what it was like for both races. We seen how it was unfair for the blacks and how even the whites were not always perfect and on a high level.

    6. As i say its my 'OPINION". I dont like how the book was shown with only the main characters really being white. I would've liked the book if Tom Robinson or even Calpurnia was the main character instead of scout. Lets agree to disagree.

  2. I really enjoyed this book and the film in to kill a mockingbird by Harper lee. What I enjoyed in this book was the life experiences that these characters had to go through. The character I was most interested in was scout. She was a very important and good person. You can say she completely matured from the beginning to the end of the film. Another thing I enjoyed in the film was the curiosity of Boo Radley. I can tell he kept an eye on the kids to make sure they were safe. And when they were really in danger he stepped up and saved the kids life. What I don't like though is the Tom Robinson trial and how he was found guilty for something he didn't do. I feel sorry for Mayella and how she tried to frame tom for something he didn't even do. But overall this was a really great book. In the future I think this should be taught to another eight grade class so they can learn morals in life that will help them for the future.

    2. I totally agree with your thoughts on why it should be teaches to future 8th graders. It also made me think it would be helpful for them to read so that they can get some of the lessons that Atticus taught Scout and Jem because they really can be helpful in our lives like his lesson about walking a mile in a persons shoes before you judge them. Children our age often judge each other not knowing our personally situations mad what we have going on

''Reading To kill a mocking bird''. The book was a very good book but it was very hard to understand the first parts of the book but getting towards the end of the book it was starting to get more better because when you started posting comments on the blog and then we had more conversations on the book and the class room with each other help a lot to because everybody was getting to no more about the book and started taking more out to use the book and really try to get details about things to share and class ''To kill a mocking bird''.The first time i heard the tittle i was thinking to my self that it was a book about learning how to kill a real mocking bird but when a read the book on page 1 it states the a thirteen boy name Jem badly broken at the elbow in his fear was about would he ever be able to play football again ...And then a compared the book to the book called the alchemist because the little boy had a fear to then i knew the book will get better as you read more and go far and think at the same time as reading....But the film was good it was very tricky because some of the parts in the book was played in the film and some of the parts was in the was not played and the film so you had to find them parts and it was like solving a puzzle because you had to use different pieces and put it together ......................

  4. After reading the entire novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" I feel as if the novel ended too quickly, I wanted to see what was going to happen when Jem wakes up, was Jem and Scout going to keep in touch with Boo Radley? I'm still curious about a lot of things that wasn't mentioned in the novel. Something that I enjoyed in the novel was the way they talked about the people in Maycomb who were racist. I enjoyed this novel because it gives me, the reader, a taste of how African Americans were actually treated in the 1930s. Finally, I believe that this book should be taught to future 8th graders because I think this novel can change their aspect of life and how it really was in history, Scout and Jem changes over a period of time and maybe this novel can help the future 8th graders become of age as well.

    1. Trinity in my opinion I felt that the book didn't end to quickly I felt that it was good that every thing that had a problem got solved like bob, boo, and the kids but I also agree that I wanted to see what will happen when Jem woke up or will the kids keep in touch with boo radley.

  5. What I enjoyed about the novel for the book to kill a mokingbird was scout's life growing up as a little girl from Maycomb Alabama because I think with all the new things scout was learning came from all the people and things that she listened to and saw that made a big impact on her life like when boo radley start giving gifts to scout and Jem in the hole of the tree that made a big impact on scout's life because it made her think that they was friends by what she saw in that tree everyday and it was true when boo helped them fight off Atticus.I really didn't like nothing from the novel except when they sent Tom to jail even though he was innocent because that seem racist to me because sending a black man to jail because his case had something to do with a white woman is wrong.and yes I do think that they should teach this book to future 8th graders because I am one of them and I know if I like the book then I think that they will like the book it.

  7. What I enjoyed about the novel is .. The different emotions, and feelings Atticus has toward Scout & Jem , Colored People to Atticus, Whites Toward Blacks and etc. What made me dislike the book is because Harper Lee didn't finish the story off. Leaving it at Jem was hurt made everyone want to read it more and think on it because Jem had a experience and to think upon it you wouldn't have thought he was going to be the person who got hurt.

    - Yes, because even though we aren't treated how we was back then we still have the right to know how whites treated us. The to know that some whites are aware that colored people are getting disrespected that show some where in their heart they aren't like all whites

My final thoughts about to kill a mockingbird Is that it was challenging book and it took us a little while to really understand the book in the way Harper Lee wanted us to. Harper Lee put some racism in the book and lot of trouble going back and forth and having us wondering what will happen next in the chapter, so that made the book more interesting. I enjoyed the way that Atticus stranded up for Tom to take on the trial because Atticus knew that if he wouldn't been Tom attorney he really wouldn't have a fair trial so Atticus at least tried to take the chances and help. I didn't like when everybody was talking about Tom and he was only the main black character in the novel. I like how scout stop being a negative person and a tomboy and she believes that If Aunt Alexandra can be a lady at times so could she. I think that this book should be taught to the future 8th graders because they would learn about how bad the racism was going on back in the 1930s and they would learn something in life in the future.

  9. My final thoughts on the entire story To Kill A Mockingbird was that it was a really fun and interesting and a challenging story to read. I enjoyed this book because it actually made me think about what it would be like to live in a town like Maycomb and also imagine what it looks and feels like. I also enjoyed the characters of the book. I enjoyed the characters of the book because they all had different opinions and point of views on each other and other people in the story. Some things I didn't like about the novel is that it had a lot of racism I also didn't like most of the conflicts that were going on in the story. I think this story should be taught to future 8th grade classes because it would give them a chance to see how racism really was back then. Also because it would help them learn more about how peoples minds were set back then.

  10. One thing I really enjoyed about the book was Scouts relationship with Atticus. It warmed my heart how he was always there for her when ever she needed him. It's always different to read about things you wanted or had. I used to have a relationship like that with my father when I was younger. But as I got older I wish I had my father here physically because there were times when I needed to confide to him. (Confide-to tell someone a secret or private matter while trusting them not to repeat it to others.) In the story Scout was a tomboy but Atticus never judged her, he still loved her and treated her like she was special. My favorite moment between them was on page 178 when Atticus was stern towards Scout and she began to cry she said "there was no where to go, but I turned to go and met Atticus's vest front. I buried my head in it and listened to the small internal noises that went on behind the blue cloth." I felt calmed because I knew that in his arms she felt safe and like everything would be ok and I know to get that feeling from your parent is the best feeling in the world. There relationship was so powerful.

One thing I didn't enjoy about the novel was the way Harper Lee sugar coated the racism. She made it seem like black people really had a chance. But if that event actually happened in that time Tom Robinson would have never had a chance at trail. He was have been hung or abused as soon as they claimed he raped Mayella. So with a book so powerful you might as well tell the truth and be up front with the racism, because when you sugar coat things people tend to get confused and racism isn't anything that shouldn't be upfront about. What black people had to go trough should always be an honest answer.

I think the book should be taught to other 8th grade classes because it's a powerful book and it can make people have a different outlook on life because that's how it affected me. It teaches different lessons and can make one look at their way of living also. But I think when reading this book there should always be a conversation about the racism because the book doesn't give it to you hardcore so you understand what black people really went through.

  11. What I enjoyed about " To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee is the lesson that we learn from the book. What i learned from the book is maturity and racism. We can compare this book to real life due to the ScottsBoro trial and how the world was segregated around the 1930's. I actually think that this story is the childhood memories of the author Harper Lee so that tells me what she had to go through as a child in Alabama. What I didn't like about the book is the ending. The ending was very confusing and it should have continued for at least another chapter because then we would have known Jem's reaction about Boo Radley finally coming out and what they did about Bob Ewell trying to kill Jem and Scout. My thoughts about the book is that is was very inspirational because it taught you how it used to be back in the days and how you should become more mature as you get older. For instance, In the beginning of the book Scout was impractical but as she grew older and finally realized how the world has it's ups and downs she grew to change her ways as a young lady. I do recommend this book to future 8th grade classes because i feel that while and after you read this book you get a better thought of comparing books to the real world and digging deeper into a strong text. The characters that I mainly liked in the book was Scout and Atticus. Scout went from oblivious to conscious meaning that she has grown a lot as a girl especially in the town that she is residing in with all of the prejudice and discrimination. Now Atticus was a "mockingbird". He was very motivated and encouraging especially when it came Scout and Jem and any other person that needed help. He taught Scout to never feed off of negativity and taught Jem that he would be able to do anything that he put his mind to. He was even brave enough to defend Tom Robinson a black man that everyone saw as a disgrace to their town. Overall this book has taught me a deep lesson from discrimination to maturity and I will never forget it.

  12. What I enjoyed about the story was the challenges it had and it made me think more, even though I couldn't really read/understand. I like how the author included things about racism because it gave me a better view of how prejudice people tend to act and they way they are. I enjoyed the drama it had between the people in the town against Atticus and Tom Robinson.I didn't like the fact that in the beginning the book was boring and it lost my attention and i didn't want to read it anymore. I don't like that the people disliked Atticus because he was just doing his job and what was right.I don't like that the novel ended so quickly because I wanted to find out will Scout still talk to Boo. I feel that this novel should be taught to the future 8th grade because the novel will teach them the different feature of how African American was treated.

  13. In the book "To Kill A mockingbird" i enjoyed the trial because it was very interesting and it caught my attention the most. This story was hard to understand on some parts but once it was explained better to me i liked it a lot. I also like the part when Boo Radley came out to help Jem an Scout when they were being attacked. I liked that part because he finally comes out to show that he's not a bad person and that they get to meet him and befriend with him, they no longer have to mess with him and be creeped out by him. This book teaches many lessons and is different from any other book because they give you the lessoned that suppose to be learned but in this book it really makes you think. I feel that this book should be taught to the future 8th grade classes because they get to get a different experience with this book. Also because it will help them in the future when they see something challenging it wont be hard to understand because when they have the experience with this book then it will feel like its nothing to them. In my opinion this book would be great to introduce to other 8th grade classes.

  14. At the beginning of the story "TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD" I thought the book was boring and dry but as the character "BOO RADLEY" came into the story it started to lighten up and I became more interested in the book. This book is mostly about racism and how to deal with disrespect which really got me interested in finishing the book this book has a lot of drama and tension mainly coming from TOM ROBINSON who was falsely accused of the rape of a white women that's what really caught my eye. One thing I didn't like about this book was how they treated Tom Robinson and locked him away I don't think anyone should be treated that way especially for something that they didn't do. Tom Robinson was jailed and set free by over ten bullets why all because of the lies people tell but the secrets they keep. I do think that this book should be taught to future eight graders because it's a really interesting book and after reading it u may have a different way of looking at the world also.

  15. After reading the whole novel "To Kill A Mockingbird I feel that it was a very interesting book and you can learn a life lesson from. I really think that the book should have been a little longer. At times this book was hard to understand at some point but I got my understanding but communicating with other or discussing writing our post on the blog. I really felt that they should have extended the part when Jem and had went to sleep at the end so that him and his sister Scout would have to talk to Boo Radley a little more. During this novel I enjoyed when Boo came out to help Scout and Jem when they were getting Attacked but Bob Ewell. I didn't like the fact that Bob Ewell had to bring the kids into all the drama because he couldn't get to Atticus. Also when Mayella had to blame Tom Robinson for raping her when he really didn't. If Tom would have really raped her her wouldn't have all the emotions he had during the Trail. Also you could tell it could have been her Father because she was scared to really answer them questions about her father when he looked up at her. Yes this book should be taught to the future 8th grade classes because I feel that they would learn a life lesson from this book. They could gain a little bit from this book.

  16. The book To Kill A Mockingbird was the best book that i have read about all my life that i have been in school. I really enjoyed reading this beacuse it showed me how things really was back in the 1930's even dow every thing was not stayed. The Tom Robinson case one of my best parts in the book because it should me how blacks and whites really felt about each other back in the 1930's. The Tom Robinson case was good because Atticus Finch did not have took take the case but he took a chance of him knowing that he just might would win the case or him just thinking that he was going to lose. But Atticus did not care he still took the chance and took the case he did not have to but he did and that shows a lot of courage and trust because if Atticus know that his word would not go against a white woman and a white man why would he take the case. But still it was up at Atticus to do his job and take care of Tom Robinson case and do his job the best way he could. Another part that i liked in the book was when Scout started to act like an young lady. This was interesting for me because it shows coming of age because when you come of age you have to change a lot of things that you was first thinking that you thought was right. And Scout really showed a way of coming of age because she came from acting like her brother Jem to start acting like herself and having her own way of doing things that an young lady should act. Yes i do feel that this should be taught to 8th graders in the future.

  17. To start off, I actually really enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee because overall it's a nice story. To Kill A Mockingbird is about a girl named scout, a man named Atticus and a boy named Jem. They all are experiencing their own struggles. Scout struggles to conform to her gender role. Atticus struggles to defend a negro because he is ridiculed by Maycomb. Atticus is called a nigger lover because of it. Jem struggles to live without his mother, mature and face up to reality. It's a touching story because of how it's set up and I'm interested in things about history. Atticus is trying to defend Tom Robinson who is accused of raping a poor white woman named Mayella Ewell and tries to explain the situation to Jem and Scout in the best way he can. However I enjoyed The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho even more because it had so many deep and powerful meanings. I think we should've read a novel like that one. To Kill A Mockingbird is just a little too slow for me even though it has a nice story. At times it caught my attention like the last few chapters when Jem and scout were being attacked and I liked how Harper Lee made her novel come full circle like The Alchemist. It started with scout saying that Jem got his arm broken badly at the elbow and ended with that event. In addition, I also didn't like how the novel ended. I would've wanted to see what happened to Jem. It was difficult to read as well because of how the characters talk. The characters talked like country people saying words like "Yes'm" and "Nome". I think this novel should be taught to other 8th graders because the student can learn from it. The novel has vocabulary that is up to an 8th graders level and it allows the readers to practice inferencing like with the meaning of the mockingbird in chapter 10.

  18. Yes i think this book should be taught to future 8th grade classes because it is a very good book and it has lots of details like when you had to find symbols to the book it was hard because you had to look thru different chapters and the book has basically about getting the understanding about agreements because its very important to read the book then watch the film because reading is taking more into your mind and watching is remembering visions from the passage that have been played so i thought if you understand the book you can get to realize whats going on in the book and the first part of the literature when you explore the book its not very good because its like a dry taste of whats happing when the say the town is very little in its called Maycomb in its very old you would think that its going to boring the things i would change in the book is the tittle me cause its in open word that catches your attention the word'' kill'' a mother/father wouldn't want to buy there chid. to platform your thinking you are showing people what you have learned from the ''TKAM'' because over coming the passage s a new start and its much harder to think when you have to go back in the text and find more things and it was more black people in the book because it says they some of the whites was racist because if they was racist then it have to be more blacks because they was not just racist to Tom Robinson .......

  19. My final thoughts about the book is that at first the book was very boring. It was basically like this, here's a town, it's 1934, here's the background nothing special really. But as the story continues we are introduced to some very interesting characters and the plot starts to get better. As it goes on we come upon a problem and everything from there is suspense and excitement and the book ends with a bang! What I liked most about the book was the different relationships and interactions between the characters. Examples being ; Atticus and his children, the children and Ms.Maudie, the children and Boo Radley, the Ewells and negroes, the town and negroes, ect. the list goes on. These relationships are important they help builld the town. They show the segregation and reputation of everyone and where they stand in each other's lives and how they make a difference in thier town , the story, and the eyes of the reader.

  20. Provide your final thoughts on To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee? What do you enjoy about the novel? What didn't you like? Be very specific. Do you think this book should be taught to future 8th grade classes? Why or why not.

After reading 'To Kill a Mockingbird" By Harper Lee, I feel that it was a challenging and grate book to I counter. I liked how Harper Lee seat up the book with the racism theme it was epic. It had a lot of drama which raised and gather my attention. In the story I feel that the judge should have stepped up an did something if he knew that Tom Roberson was not guilty even if it meant losing a case from the community. Over the time of the trail I gather more respect for Atticus Finch for taking the Tom Roberson case if it meant putting his family life in danger. As reading the bock I really picked up on more things like the snow man and the missionary circle. When I first encountered this book I thought it was going to be bordering from the way Harper Lee started off the first chapter but as I went on to chapter two I found it quit interesting especial Scout character. Another thing I approached was how every body looked at Boo Radley I didn't think that Boo Radley would harm or hurt anybody. I can relate this book to the Sand Lot and the book Maniac Magee at the end that man who every body say is mean and crazy always turn out to be nice and helpful.
