Bob Ewell...Create a character sketch

What kind of person is Bob Ewell. Use evidence from the text as you craft your response. For those of you looking for a challenge: Compare and contrast the characters of Bob Ewell and Atticus Finch: In what ways are they similar? In what ways are they different?

  1. After I read chapter 17 of "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, I would say Bob Ewell is a benighted person. In the story Bob Ewell is unemployed and is also a member of one of Maycombs poor family's. He may be poor because of the Great Depression or it may be another reason. I say Bob is benighted because he lacks the same opportunity as everyone else in Maycomb. As a white man in Maycomb I would doubt that he would be poor but since he suffers from the Great Depression and does not try to change I guess he has no choice but to stay the same. Bob Ewell and Atticus are alike and different in many ways. For example both Atticus and Bob suffer from the Great Depression. On the other hand Bob gets welfare money while Atticus works for his money and supports his children. Since they say Bob is a drunk it's a strong possibility he spends his money on alchohol. There could be many ways to compare and contrast Atticus and Bob Ewell but I say Bob Ewell is a benighted person because he does not have the same opportunities as everyone else in the the text.

    2. Kalvon I disagree with you statement about Bob Ewell being poor due to the Great Depression because in the story it says that Ewells are poor because all the money that Bob Ewell gets he spends it all on whisky

    3. I agree with you kalvon about the way when you said that Bob Ewell is a benighted person because benighted mean pitiful and lack of opportunity.

    4. I agree divia kalvon is wrong because it's hard time for them in the Great Depression, but when Bob got his money he was in a good hurry to drink.

    6. Could you please re-read the post. I clearly said he MAY be poor because of the Great Depression. Something had to happen before him spending his money and getting welfare to buy the whiskey and other things. You have to apply for welfare so he must have had a huge loss

    7. Kalvon,

You've created a post which has inspired many of your peers to react...I didn't even realize what benighted meant. You taught me something today. Thank you. This is a captivating argument.

    8. Kalvon I agree with you because I stated some of the same things in my paper. He might be Little poor because he get his money of unemployment. I had to look up what Benighted meant because to tell you the truth I really didn't know what that word meant. Good Job Kalvon you have a very nice blog post.

    10. Thanks to all , and for all who does not know what benighted means it's to be in a state of pitiful or contemptible intellectual or moral ignorance, typically owing to a lack of opportunity.

    11. I agree with your statement Kalvon because the Ewell's possibly could be poor due to the fact that Bob spends all of their money on beer and whiskey. The other reason why they may be poor is because they live by the town garbage dump basically on the Negro side of town. Negros during the Great Depression were in fact poor. They may underestimate Bob to not be poor but all of the evidence that is displayed in the text proves your point in stating that he is poor.

  4. Bob Ewell is a character from Tkam , He beat his daughter after seeing her trying to kiss Tom Robinson . Bob Ewell is a man who accused a black man ( Tom Robinson ) of abusing his daughter Mayella. He spends all his money on whisky.
Atticus and Bob Ewell is different because Atticus makes his money by working cases and spends his money supporting his kids and Bob Ewell gets his money off of welfare checks and spends it on a bottle of whisky.

  6. Bob Ewell is one of Maycomb’s poorest family. He was in the wrong of accusing Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. Ewell was represented as the vicious side of the South. He was poverty, ignorant and hate-full racial prejudice. To me he was another Lula, the lady from Calpurnia's church who was also ignorant, and had hate-full racial prejudice.

    11. @ Mr.C ; I think Harper Lee presented Lula & Bob similar, because they both were a different race and she probably wanted to persuade people that just because your a different race you can do things people wouldn't expect you to do. I think her motivation for doing this were different actions of different race.

      Delete
    12. @ Cashmere: So are you saying that Harper Lee wanted to show that despite the differences people see at this time between whites and blacks, that they are both capable of being crual and rude...basically acting from a place of ignorance?

    13. @Mr.C I agree with Cashmere I feel this is why Harper Lee presented Bob and Lula

  7. I feel Bob Ewell is a spiteful cruel man, and during the trial Atticus it reveals the true person in him to everyone. I don't believe he did it to hang onto any kind of reputation. It really seemed like Bob Ewell didn't care what people thought of him he was just plain evil person. He is so racist that he is willing to sacrifice Tom because he doesn't want anyone in the town to know that his daughter sale her body to man and don't mind sleeping with black man. This all goes back to the racism of the town.

The kind of person that I think that Bob Ewell is like the lowest of the low. They don't have any money and no education. Bob Ewell got lack of opportunities and he is a member of the poor families. He is in poverty maybe because of the Great Depression and he should try to do something about it like get a job and try to help himself. Bob Ewell should try to make some money and work for it for his children like Atticus working for his money.

  9. I feel that Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell are alike because they both are hard working. What made me feel this way is when Bob Ewell was trying to tell the judge just because he is not Mayella by logical father dose not mean that he is going to leave out of her life. And they way that Atticus plays the role is by not giving up on Tom Robinson just because they was not the same color race. They are also alike because it shows how they both are brave man they take the stand for something that dose not require them to do so, when they could say forget it and move on about there life. In a way they are also different because that's Atticus job to do those things for Tom Robinson. Atticus have just told him that he could not do the job for him because the are not in the same race color. But for Bob that's not his job to stand up and still take the place for being in Mayella life. He could have said to Mayella okay it's time for me to go now my time with is done but still remember that I'm still the father figure I you life.

I think I can compare Atticus and mr.ewell because they both argue and will fight for their spouse or clients. I can contrast these two because mr.ewell is racist and prejudice like the comment on page 196. 12. From reading through chapter 17 of to kill a mokingbird by Harper lee I would say that bob ewell is the kind of person that represents the ignorant side of the south where he is always very drunk, has a poor family, and very very hate-filled racial justice.in the middle of chapter 17 in the court bob acts ignorant when Atticus ask didn't you think she should have had a doctor immediately and he responed by saying that it never slipped his mind and he never wanted to call one or it would have cost him five dollars.but the real reason was after calling for a doctor he would have had to sign his name and when he would have signed it with his right hand everybody would have known he did so he acted racial injustice to them to cover up the fact that he beat up his own daughter.

  13. In my opinion, I believe Bob Ewell is uncooperative, desperate and devious in To Kill A Mockingbird. On page 230 of Chapter 17, Bob Ewell says, "We'll if I ain't I can't do nothing about it now, her ma's dead," instead of answering the question directly about whether he was Mayella's father. Generally speaking, the courtroom is a formal and serious place. Bob Ewell isn't cooperating with the solicitor, Mr. Gilmer, which shows how he isn't taking the matter of his daughter being raped seriously. The text also says, " Maycomb's Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once a Negro cabin." [pg.227] In all likelihood, when someone is poor they don't have the needs for them to survive. Bob Ewell is poor so he is most likely desperate for some money especially because this is the time of the Great Depression. In addition, the story states "Mr. Ewell considered the matter carefully and seemed to decide that the question was safe." [pg.235] Most of the time when people are confident about their decision in a court, there isn't a lot of pressure on them to come up with an answer. Bob Ewell has to consider the question because he was afraid that he was going to be tricked. Usually, if you know the truth you wouldn't worry about being tricked.

  14. From reading chapter 17 Bob Ewell is a racist person. While he was on trial he kept referring to Tom as a nigger. Also on page 234 he refers to the living situation as a nigger-nest and refers to the people as dangerous. I also I believe that he is lying about his daughter being raped because on page 234 Atticus asked Bob why didn't he call for a doctor. He told Atticus there wasn't no need to because he seen what happened. Atticus was referring to her physical condition.... If a person gets raped typically you need to take them to a doctor because they have been sexually hurt. If he cared about his daughters we'll being he should have took her to the hospital. So it's a little fishy that he didn't take her to the hospital even after he explained the seriousness of her injuries. But he also told Atticus that he didn't run after Tom because he was so called worried about Mayella, but never took her to doctor. If his intentions were to never take her to the doctor then he should have ran after the rapist. But he didn't so it furthers ones thinking to what If Bob hurt his daughter him self to make a story about her being raped for his own selfish reasons.

  15. I think Bob Ewell is the type of person who is racist, and known for being very determined to his daughter and his family. I believe that Bob Ewell is racist because in the text it states " I seen that black nigger youder ruttin on Mayella!"(pg. 231). Bob Ewell didn't really seem like he was upset with the fact that his daughter may have got raped, I think that it was just the fact that Tom Robinson was an African American ( well as they were called back in the day a Negro). Bob Ewell was a poor white man and I think he is a liar just to get some money to get accepted from the other whites, and also the whites disliked the Ewells and the blacks so they would most likely take the Ewells side.

    1. I agree with your statement Trinity. Bob Ewell is in fact racist because you can tell by the way that he was interacting with Mr Finch and Mr Gilmer in the courtroom. To me it seems that he was filled with anger not because Mayella was raped but it was the fact that she was "supposedly" raped by Tom Robinson a black man.

    4. @ Trinity: What evidence does the text give us about the type of father Bob is to his children...perhaps you will want to respond after closely reading Chapter 18.

      Delete
  16. Bob Ewell is a nervous and narcissistic person in the text "To Kill A Mockingbird", due to chapter 17. In the text it states, "I'll repeat the question," said Atticus . "Can you read and write"? "I most positively can." "Will you write your name and show us"? "I most positively will. How do you think I sign my relief checks"?(pg 236). Generally speaking, when someone is self centered they will make everything about them sound good in a conceited way. Atticus Finch is a determined and brave man and father. In chapter 17 of " To Kill A Mockingbird" it states, " Mr. Ewell, "Atticus began, "folks were doing a lot of running that night. Let's see, you say you ran to the house, you ran to the window, you ran inside, you ran to Mayella, you ran for Mr. Tate. Did you, during all this running, run for a doctor "? The similarities between Bob Ewell and Atticus Finch is that they both get their point across when they have too. From my understanding, they both care about their families and won't let anything happen to them. The differences are that Bob Ewell is conceited and self centered about how much money he makes and how he may be better than everybody else but he still cares about his family if they are harmed or not. In the text it states,"Well, I run around the house to get in, but he run out the front door just ahead of me. I sawed who he was, all right. I was too distracted about Mayella to run after'im. I run in the house and she was lyin on the floor squallin'. (Pg 233).Now, Atticus is a man that is very serious about his job and supporting his family the best that he can. The people in the town may perceive him as a nigger lover because he is defending Tom Robinson but he is just getting the job done. Atticus as a father is very helpful and endured. He helps Scout with her reading and helps Jem be determined about his future. He teaches both of his kids to make smart decisions and not influenced into madness with other people. For example In chapter 9 of TKAM it states,"Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This ones mine, I guess. You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change... It's a good one, even if it does resist learning." Generally speaking, when you want your child to do the right thing , you give them advice so that they could think before they do certain actions.

  19. I feel that Bob Ewell is the type of person that is going through a lot and a
person that is poor. Reading through chapter 17 Bob Ewell was considered a poor family living in Maycomb. I feel the only reason that he was poor and suffered a lot because the Great Depression was going on. In the story To Kill A MockingBird it states" Maycomb Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump what once a Negro cabin." Bob Ewell he suffered he didn't really have anything he lived as the blacks would live right behind the dump. He had to live behind where all the trash was at, it have been stinky and filthy. Bob Ewell is getting his money from Unemployment. I feel that Atticus and Bob Ewell is alike and a lot of ways but is also different in a certain kind of way. They is alike because they both live in Maycomb but they both is having hard times through the Great Depression. They is different because Bob Ewell have to earn his money off getting Unemployment and Atticus get his money by working for his money and doing what he suppose to do for his children.

    3. Daisha I really like your blog post because Bob Ewell was so quick to believe in Anyang that he say with no if and or but about it. He just jump straight to conclusion just because he say that he see that Black Nigger Ruttin on his daughter. He is kind of racist too.

    4. @ Daisha: What's his motivation for doing this? What was Harper Lee's motivation for writing it this way? Continue to explore your thinking.

  21. Bob Ewell is ignorant and very suspicious in To Kill a Mockingbird .He is somewhat devious , and is also desperate to get Tom Robinson killed . He is constantly beating around the bush like on pg.230 he says "Well,if I ain't I can't do nothing about it now,her ma's dead. This was the answer to the question asked which was "are you her father?"
