Reactions...so far?

How do you feel about To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee after reading the first 11 chapters? How motivated are you to continue reading this text?

  1. I feel this is a challenging book for many students. When I was a student, this book was taught in 8th grade. As curriculum was "dumbed down," this book was used with freshman and sophomores. With the rollout of the Common Core, this novel was returned as an anchor text for 8th grade. With that said, I do think it's a tough read, but manageable if students are committed. At this point, I believe about half the student are taking it seriously...I hope with the blog, more will be motivated to read. I am excited to see what you think of part 2...good stuff to come!

  2. I feel like this is a challenging book to read but I am really motivated to go further into the text. I also feel that the more we read the book the more it will become interesting. I have never read a book like this before and I know that when we finish reading it I will learn a deep lesson.

    4. Elaborate more on the comment: "I have never read a book like this before." What do mean by that? It caught my attention.

  4. I feel that this book is really hard to understand at times but it's a very interesting book to readers and that not only 8th grade read it many other higher grades read this book. But for starters they might not understand it but they will manage to get through it. Also I'm very happy that we made a wonderful and creative blog that we can from the hole 8th grade can come together and give comments on what we think about the chapters and the book and that it motivates me to continue to read on and wait to see what coming next ;)

  5. After reading the first 11 Chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, I feel that the book is getting better by each chapter. After reading I feel that tension will start rising in this book in part 2. I believe that Boo Radley will be the character who will make the book more dramatic and will cause the book to be worth reading for me. When I first started reading the book I felt as if the book was boring and was too simple, but now as I kept reading my mind has changed. Now since the book is starting too become more dramatic and tension is rising I want to continue reading the book to see what happens next.

    1. What made the book simple in your opinion....some of that vocabulary is tough...even for me, and I've read the book several times. I can't seem to remember what some of those words mean... still!

  6. How I feel about the book so far after reading up to chapter 11 is that it's a really good book. It really shows me how life would be living in a town like Maycomb. I would like to continue reading this book to see how Scout and Jem would turn out in a town like Maycomb. I would also like so see what the title of the story mean because I'm still not understanding what the title has to do with the text.

I feel that To Kill A Mockingbird so far is difficult to read but it's very interesting. At first, it was slow and boring to read, but now I'm enjoying the plot of the story. To be honest, it's difficult to read because of the language that the characters are speaking in and the great vocabulary. Most of the time it's difficult to read a text that you are unfamiliar with. I also believe that chapter eleven is inspiring, and that it has a powerful meaning. It shows how even when the odds are against you, you still have the option of going through with it and at least trying. I'm truly motivated to continue reading this book because I like to try to challenge myself with different things and I like the overall plot of the story

  8. When I first start reading chapter 1 was so boring. When I got to reading on 2-11 were some very interesting chapters. I must admit that these chapters is very tough to discuss and read a little bit sometimes. The book is a very nice novel to read. It also have some challenges moments that you will come across and get confused but you have to read on to understand. I believe that I am extremely motivated to read on to the next chapters because I really want to figure out what's going to happen next. I'm trying to see what challenges people face and what's been going on through out the summer.

  9. I feel that this book "To Kill A Mockingbird" is a basic story but it has challenging chapters, different vocabulary words that I never heard of. For this to be my first time ever reading this book, I can say that I'm on the right track but I can do a little better. Chapters 1-7 were simple for me, but from there I've been a little off. This book is like a text to world relationship because this happened in real life once upon of time. Yes, this book had me emotional because of the challenges Mrs. Dubose faced which was her house catching on fire, Tom Robinson being accused of raping one of the Ewells daughter, Jem changing on scout, etc. I am eagerly motivated to keep reading this book to the very end because this book is very interesting and outgoing to me.

    1. Hopefully, as we begin to bring in some non-fiction texts which reveal what life was like in the 1930's, a lot of these issues will be cleared up for you!

  11. Reading through chapters1through11 in the book to kill a mockingbird is very interesting to me because the book was made about 50 years ago so I thought the book was going to be not that interesting to my liking but after giving some time of reading the book and the chapters I felt it was very interesting.some of the parts through chapters 1through11 that seem very interesting was the part when aunt Alexandra came to live with Atticus family I thought it was very exciting to see how scout and Jem would react to this surprise over some days.also some of the characters that I really enjoy is scout and Jem because I like how Jem and scout's since of humor is especially scout's.

    1. How did you feel about chapter 11 that happened in Chapter 13, also you didn't talk about how you feel about Mrs.Dubose

  12. So far this book has been very different from the other reading experiences I have had but in a good way. I've learned, related, contrasted, and had many different opinions about the all of the characters. When I reached chapter 11 I felt as if Mrs. Dubose spoke out to me the most in a motivational and encouraging way. In the book it says" Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict, said Atticus. She took it as a pain-killers for years...she said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that's what she did"(pg.147-148). We'll most of the time when people are drug addicts, they have a hard time trying to break their addiction, and they get so caught up so badly that they give up on themselves. So to read that she did what she said she was going to do is very inspiring to me, because it persuades me to be a better person and stick to my words and be as strong as she was.

I feel that the story was boring in the beginning then as I kept reading it was getting interesting by each chapter. In part 2 I believe that it would get more better and people will get more comfortable reading this book because of Boo Radley. They may just wonder about is Boo Radley ever going to really introduce himself to Scout and Jem,and how they would react. I feel that I am strongly motivated to read on through the chapters.

  14. I think this text so far is in the in and out zone. It's challenging but is very I think this text so far is in the in and out zone. It's challenging but is very interesting. The reason I say this is challenging is because when the text is in zone out stage (boring), it's hard to keep up and you might lose track of what you just read. For example, when aunt Alexandra was talking about the history of their family, it was very hard to keep up. This was in chapter 12. In the beginning, it was very hard to keep up when most of the characters were being introduced. At the end of chapter 12, I knew aunt Alexandra was going to be strict how she was introduced by her first two words in chapter 13."Put my bag in the front bedroom". Her second word was Jean Louise, stop scratching your head. I knew she was going to be mean. But overall its a very good story. Rate from one to ten:seven.

  16. When I first engage in 11 chapters of To Kill A Mockingbird was interesting and fun to engage in. The novel is a in and out going story what by that is at one point it's interesting and the next point it's bordering. So it's kind of hard to keep up with the story. This was in chapter 12. In the beginning, it was very hard to keep up when most of the characters were being introduced. Alexandra was talking about the history of their family, it was very hard to keep up. But so far I really like this story in I'm happy to keep engaging in this novel

  17. When I first started reading this book I felt that this book was going to be boring, but now that I have gotten up to this point in the book, I feel that this book is exciting and more interesting and inspiring to read. This book has gotten exciting because like in chapter 10 when mrs Dubose's house had burned down, boo Bradley had finally came out and did something that was nice. This book is also inspiring because in chapter 11 when mrs Dubose had passed away and gave up her addiction before she died and died free. I am motivated to continue reading this book.
